Creating a New Repertoire

Antico Moderno’s mission is to engage today’s composers to create new works inspired by historical instruments and performance practice. Many elements of historical performance have been neglected by current musicians and composers: from the instruments themselves like harpsichords, fortepianos, baroque stringed instruments, and viols to elements of style and aesthetics like rhetoric, variable pitch level, and temperament. These old instruments and old aesthetics can be used in new and fantastic ways, opening up new worlds of sound for composers to explore and audiences to enjoy.
